What is DM on Instagram?
DM stands for Direct Messaging. Yes, that’s right, it’s just a message you send or receive! Now you can go back to all those phrases you saw a million times and finally make sense of them. Or go back to the beginning of the article. It will be much clearer what the author wanted to say.
Direct Messaging is also known as Instagram Direct, because Instagram likes to have its terms. Whatever you want to call it, Direct Messaging is an Instagram’s feature that enables sending and receiving messages privately.
When Instagram first kicked off, there were no options alike. The users were limited to communicating with other people in the comment section. Luckily, those days are gone, and now you can message others, and others can do the same with you.
Before we get to talking about DMs in more detail, let’s see how Instagram DM works.
How do I use DM on Instagram?
To access your DM on Instagram, all you have to do is tap on in the top right corner of your feed. Once you have tapped on it, a new page will open, and you will be able to see and manage your messages. Here’s how it actually looks like:
You can see there are two tabs in the DM. All the conversations you have will be split into Primary and General messages.
Now, what’s Primary DM on Instagram? Primary tab is simply a tab where all of your messages will first appear. Would you like to, you can swipe the messages you receive in Primary tab into General tab.
What’s General DM on Instagram? Simply put, this is a place where the messages you would like to get back to later will be held. Both Primary DM and General DM are good options for organizing your messages. Let’s say you receive a lot of messages daily, and you cannot reply to everyone right this second. These DM tabs can help you coordinate your messages in a way that best suits you and your time.

Messaging was stopped being used only for text messages a long time ago. Sure, you can still send a text, nobody is stopping you. However, you can send many more things as a DM on Instagram.

As we mentioned earlier, you can also send the posts you see on your feed. A cute picture worth sharing with your friends, sure, why not?

Sharing other people’s profiles to someone can also be done through Instagram Direct. This goes for Location pages as well, which can come in handy in many cases.
