Whatever the reason, picking a new Instagram username is very simple. We’re going to show you the quickest way to do it, so let’s get started!
How to Change Instagram Username
The process of changing your username on Instagram is very easy. Below, we list each step you need to take to change your username.
- Go to your profile page. Whenever you want to make a change to your account, you will need to navigate to this page first. You can do so by tapping the icon of a person at the bottom right of the screen.
- Now, you need to navigate to the ‘Edit Profile’ page. To do this, just tap the big ‘Edit Profile’ button located underneath your profile picture and bio.
- Once you are on the Edit Profile page, you will be able to change both your Name and you Username. Be careful, because these are two different things. Your Name is simply the display name that people will see when they visit your profile. You can set this to whatever you want, even if it’s already taken. Meanwhile, the Username is the identifier for your entire Instagram account. This is what people should search to find your profile. Furthermore, if someone searches www.Instagram.com/YourUsername, this will show your account. As mentioned before, this must be unique and not already taken by someone else.
What are the restrictions when choosing a username?
Instagram has set a number of requirements for when choosing a username. Firstly, your username cannot be longer than 30 characters. This is to prevent people from choosing ridiculously long usernames that no one can remember. The other restriction is that you can only use certain characters. These characters are: Letters, numbers, periods (.), and underscores (_). You can’t use any other symbols or punctuation in your username, such as hyphens, commas or the @ symbol. It’s also important to note that your username must not contain any swear words or offensive words / phrases. Instagram’s system will detect most swear words and prevent you from choosing them in the first place. However, if you do manage to choose an offensive name, Instagram may discover this later on. This can lead to your account getting banned, so it’s best to avoid doing this!
What if my username is already taken?
If you choose a username that has already been taken by someone else, Instagram will not let you choose it. Instead, a red banner will be displayed at the top of the screen. The banner will show the text: ‘This username isn’t available. Please try another’. So, in this case you will have to enter a username that isn’t already in use. Remember, Instagram has over 100 million registered users, so you make need to get creative with your username!
How many times can I change my username?
There is not set limit on how many times you can change your username. However, it is not recommended to do this too much. This is because Instagram may eventually detect your account as showing spammy behaviour if you continuously update your username. Furthermore, people will no longer be able to search for your profile using your old username. You may also end up forgetting your username and not being able to log in if you change it too much. So, it’s best to think of a really awesome username and then stick to it!
