How to Change Password on Instagram

There are two scenarios of when you may want to change your password. The first scenario is if you have access to your account and are logged in. The second is if you have forgotten your password and cannot log in. We will walk you through both.

How to change your password when you are already logged in

  1. Go to your Instagram profile page by tapping the person icon at the bottom right
  2. Tap the three lines at the top and go to Settings
  3. Choose Security > Password
  4. You will now need to enter your current password, and then your new password twice.
  5. That’s it! You will now have set your new Instagram password. And don’t worry, you won’t need to do any more verification by email, your new password has already been set.

How to reset your Instagram password if you’ve forgotten it

  1. At the Instagram log in screen tap ‘Forgot Password?’
  2. You will now need to enter either your email, phone number or username attached to your account.
  3. Instagram will then email a link to your email address or phone number. Click this, and you will be taken to a page where you can choose a new password.

Why is it important to Have a Secure Password?

Whenever you log in to Instagram on a new device, you will have to enter your password. Therefore, it’s very important that you choose a password that is difficult to guess. It’s ok to make a password personal, however it should not be so personal that someone you know can easily guess it. For example, if you use your middle name as your password, you should include several random numbers to make it impossible to guess. If someone tries to guess this password more than a few times, Instagram will lock them out. Furthermore, you should use a password that you can easily remember. This is because if you forget your password, you will have to request a new one to your email, which takes a while.

Tips for a Secure Instagram Password

There are many ways that you can keep your Instagram password secure. Firstly, you should never use that same password on Instagram as you use on other platforms, such as Facebook or Youtube. This is because if a hacker is able to hack one of your accounts, they can then use this password to hack all of them. Furthermore, you should regularly update your password. Once every 3 – 6 months is ideal to keep things secure.
